During our first year in 2007 - 2008, our young speakers went to the community and told the story of modern day slavery in Sudan. Because they cared, and spoke up publicly, they were able to raise enough money to free 18 slaves in Darfur. They also produced a short DVD about the plight of the people of Darfur and Krysi Kovaka was awarded the Raudy Bearden Community Speaking Scholarship, in part for leading this effort.
